Leading data analyst predicts Liverpool's chance of retaining Champions League trophy

The Champions League group stage draw which took place on Thursday saw Liverpool pitted against Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg and KRC Genk in Group E.

Having featured in the last two finals what are the Reds chances of making an historic third consecutive final?

Well, leading data analysts FiveThirtyEight, who combine information and statistics to predict the outcome of sporting events have predicted who will be crowned champions of Europe in Istanbul next year.

The website was founded by Nate Silver - the prominent statistician who wrote the book which influenced the Moneyball strategy - a formula on how to win in baseball using stats.

FiveThirtyEight predicts Liverpool's Premier League rivals Manchester City are the favourites, with a 27 per cent chance of winning what would be their maiden European crown.

Blood Red: What are Liverpool's chances of Champions League glory this year?

Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich, who the Reds knocked out of the competition last season, slot in ahead of the Reds on 17 per cent.

Jurgen Klopp's side are ranked third and have a 12 per cent chance of retaining their title.

This should not concern the six-time champions as following the draw for the 2018/19 campaign Liverpool were listed as the fifth team most likely to win.

After being given a three per cent chance of making it to the 2017/18 final, the Reds overcame the odds as they booked their place in Kiev after being initially ranked 16 out of 32.

Barcelona, who were last year's favourites, are now ranked fourth with Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid propping up the top four respectively.

They are tailed by the runners-up from Madrid - Tottenham Hotspur - with Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea also making the top ten.
