Leading candidate for vacant Rangers job 'emerges'

A leading candidate for the vacant Rangers job has reportedly emerged.

Philippe Clement is said to be the top target for the Ibrox hierarchy after the latest round of interviews.

The Scottish Sun claims that 49-year-old is now the frontrunner to replace Michael Beale, who was sacked last week.

The Belgian, who has been out of work since leaving Monaco in the summer, is believed to have seriously impressed James Bisgrove and John Bennett during discussions.

Former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat also remains in the running following his interview.

While it seemed the Australian would wish to stick it out at Yokohama F. Marinos until the end of the J-League season in December, this report states that he's changed his mind and would now be prepared to walk away from his side's title charge in order to take over at Ibrox.

The Rangers board will now meet in the next 48 hours to make their final decision, with Clement seen as the favourite.

Belgium Under-21 international Nicolas Raskin believes his fellow countryman would be a good fit for the role.

Speaking after the win over St Mirren, the 22-year-old said: "I don’t know him personally, but he did very well with the teams he had in Belgium.

“And he also did incredibly well at Monaco, so let’s see what happens in the future. Would he be a good fit here? Yes, I think he’d bring some clarity and an attacking style. So I think he’d be good.”

On Beale’s sacking, Raskin added: “It’s a bit sad for everybody because the gaffer believed in everybody and put us on the field.

“We were in a bad spiral. Obviously, I can’t really say too much - we just weren’t good enough to deserve the wins. Now it’s time to look forward, to work hard and then to grow. We’ll take it game after game and look forward.”
