Leadership team expansion for hazardous atmospheres specialist

The leadership team has been significantly enhanced at a Humberston-headquartered industrial services provider.

FES (EX), an electrical contracting company specialising in work in hazardous atmospheres, has made three senior appointments from within as founder Geoff Fulcher becomes chairman.

Together the recently promoted managing director James Ward, commercial director Elle Fulcher-Fenty and finance director Martin Jackson have 25 years’ experience in the Wilton Road business.

Geoff, who launched the company in 2005, buying Roxby Training five years later and adding further offices in Hull and Teesside, said he was delighted to see the succession planning materialise. “We have taken the business to one level under my leadership, and now it is time to take it to the next level and hand over the reins to a new leadership team,” the Energy Institute fellow said. “We have had substantial contracts come in that have given us a solid base from which to continue the good work, built on quality and reliability.”

A 30-strong directly-employed team flexes to between 60 and 100 with sub-contracting personnel, with Geoff having been inspired to launch after serving as an apprentice marine electrician, going on to work in contracting, management and latterly consulting.

The company has worked across process engineering spheres and safety, health and environmental roles globally.

“The process safety division has really taken off,” he said, outlining recent growth and market expansion. “Inspection was at our core, hazardous area inspection, but process safety and installation work is contributing significantly, with complementary services around that.”

Roxby, operated from Catch at Stallingborough and a satellite site in Stockton, provides hazardous area training, with a separate team of 10.

Through Geoff the company has also contributed to various codes of best practice, and he also sat on the CBI’s Dangerous Substances Working Party with government officials.

James joined the company just under six years ago, having worked as a site manager, before going on to become a contracting engineer and latterly operations manager, ahead of returning to his home town. Geoff’s daughter Elle holds a Masters in Law, having grown up around the business and spent the last seven years in it. Martin has more than 13 years experience of accounting.

James said: “When I came to the company, further progression was important for me and Geoff has delivered on that. “Now I want to expand on the current client base and capitalise on new opportunities. We are forming really strong relationships with existing clients and expanding the team. One of my main purposes now is to show it is an attractive place to work and that hard work does pay off.”
