Leadership crisis: What next for the UK after Liz Truss?

THE DEBATE © FRANCE 24

Despite their record brevity, Liz Truss's 44 days in office will long be remembered. The UK prime minister has now resigned after pressure that became too much. How did the Conservative Party elect a leader who so badly misread the mood and the markets with her failed bid for unfunded tax cuts for the rich? We do forensics on a leader whose time in office could have been even shorter had the queen not died in her second day on the job.

The Tories have given themselves a week to pick a replacement, the fifth since Brexit. What is the best way to pick a party leader? Would a general election be better instead?

More broadly, so much has changed since the 2016 referendum to leave the EU. What kind of leadership is now needed to tackle double-digit inflation that's hurting wages and pensions, as well as an energy crisis and the war in Ukraine? How to rebound from this cascade of political crises?

Produced by Charles Wente, Juliette Laurain and Louise Guibert.
