
Families pack a Shinkansen bullet train line platform on Saturday at JR Tokyo Station in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. Stations and airports were congested, while traffic backed up along highways as travelers, including those headed to their hometowns, ventured out to destinations nationwide in the morning hours. According to the Japan Railway companies, the occupancy rate of non-reserved seats coaches reached 150 percent on some trains bound for Hakata in Fukuoka Prefecture and Morioka from Tokyo in the morning.
