Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Friday that he confirmed with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae In the view that Japan and South Korea must work to build a future-oriented relationship over the 2015 agreement on the issue of comfort women.
"Regarding the Japan-South Korea agreement, I conveyed Japan's stance clearly and in detail," Abe told reporters after meeting with Moon in Pyeongchang, South Korea. "The agreement is final and irreversible, and a promise made between countries is the basis for their bilateral relationship. I and President Moon shared the view that efforts must be made to build a future-oriented relationship between Japan and South Korea."
Meanwhile, Abe reaffirmed the need to maintain firm cooperation among Japan, South Korea and the United States to counter North Korean provocations.
"Dialogue for [the sake of] dialogue is meaningless. I clearly said so to President Moon," he said.
Abe also said the two leaders confirmed the stance, on which Japan and the United States have agreed, that U.N. member states must comply with sanctions resolutions adopted by the U.N. Security Council and put the maximum pressure on Pyongyang.
"The firm trilateral relationship will never be shaken," Abe said. "We will continue to urge North Korea to take specific action toward resolving the issues of abductions and nuclear and missile development under close cooperation among Japan, South Korea and the United States."
