Guillaume Soro, a former Ivory Coast rebel chief and widely expected to run in the 2020 presidential elections, on Friday resigned from his post as parliament speaker after having been summoned to a special session with President Alassane Ouattara.
“At this point, I am resigning,” Soro announced after the meeting with Ouattara and with whom Soro currently has fraught relations. “Refusing to resign would lead to an institutional crisis – we cannot risk endangering the fragile peace to keep a job,” he said.
