The Jets might have to deal with the repercussions of giving Le'Veon Bell a heavy workload in the season opener. Bell didn't practice Thursday and was scheduled to undergo an MRI due to shoulder soreness, according to Adam Gase.
If Sam Darnold coming down with mono weren't bad enough, losing Bell would be crushing.
It's fair to question the wisdom of playing Bell for all 71 snaps in his first game in 20 months. The dual-threat running back 92 totaled yards and a touchdown on 23 touches.
Perhaps it would have been wiser to not play him so much in his first game back.
"I'm really not sure," Gase said Wednesday about his level of concern about Bell's availability for Monday night against the Browns. "I'm waiting to find the extent of this. This could be just soreness. We don't think it's anything worse than that. But we're probably being a little extra cautious."
Bell said he felt fine on Monday and Tuesday after his Jets debut.
"I was sore, but I felt good," Bell said Wednesday. "Just normal soreness. I got up and did my normal things on Monday. Tuesday was off. And (Wednesday), I went out there and had a great practice."
Gase didn't make any declarative conclusions, but it sounded like he was fairly optimistic that Bell would be ready for the Browns game. Regardless, it makes sense for him to give Ty Montgomery, who only logged five snaps against the Bills in Week 1, more playing time.
