Le Chat Noir

Nothing like as polished or multi-faceted as some other site-specific performances on the fringe, this brief performance in a travelling sideshow tent is, however, sufficiently entertaining and odd to take up 20 minutes of your time. An audience of just 10 people at a time are blindfolded and then gently ushered one at a time into a small tent. Here, standing in total darkness, we are told the story of Echo and Narcissus. At the appropriate moment, the blindfolds are removed to reveal ... ah, that would be telling. I couldn't possibly say, except that it is not an entirely unexpected revelation but still an effective one.

What then follows is a circus-cum-cabaret act in which the story of Echo and Narcissis is played out with a modern twist and which rather delightfully features both Barbie dolls and a rare opportunity to relive 1980s Jane Fonda workout movies. The length of the show precludes any real depth, but there is an attempt at narrative that adds interest and the whole thing is pleasantly kitsch. More substance and a more stylish execution could turn this into a fringe experience to remember rather than just an amusing divertissement.
