Toshihiro Nikai, secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party, reiterated his intention to support Prime Minister Shinzo Abe if Abe wants to win a fourth consecutive term as party president, at a press conference Tuesday.
He praised Abe, who has achieved the record of longest-served prime minister, saying: "The prime minister has led the way and energetically acted and spoken. The public feels a sense of security and trust over the prime minister's personality."
When asked about possible successors to Abe, Nikai plainly said, "I have not heard anything about post-Abe."
When reporters pointed out that the long-serving administration has become lax, Nikai countered, saying, "Both the government and the party are on full alert."
