
The three candidates in the Liberal Democratic Party presidential election discussed topics including measures against the novel coronavirus and their ideas of an ideal nation at an open debate Saturday afternoon at the Japan National Press Club in Uchisaiwaicho, Tokyo.
The candidates vying to be Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's successor are Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, 71, LDP Policy Research Council Chairman Fumio Kishida, 63, and former LDP Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba, 63. The presidential election is scheduled to be held Monday.
Regarding coronavirus measures, Suga emphasized the achievements of the current administration, saying, "We have worked to maintain the balance between protecting people's lives and health and continuing social and economic activities." He also said he was determined to "promote regulatory reform and build a society that is trusted by the people."
Kishida presented his ideas of how a nation should function by saying, "It is important to focus on increasing the profits of the nation as a whole."
"We must create a country where each person has a place they belong and can be happy," Ishiba said.
