LB Markus Golden carted off field at Giants’ practice

New York Giants outside linebacker Markus Golden was taken off the field via a cart at the team’s training camp workout on Friday. He apparently was suffering from cramps, possibly caused by dehydration from the near 90-degree heat.

Golden was signed to a one-year, $3.75 million deal in March by the Giants to bolster their sagging pass rush and is poised to play a major role in defensive coordinator James Bettcher’s scheme this season.

The Giants reunited Golden with Bettcher this year because it was under Bettcher in Arizona with the Cardinals back in 2016 that Golden had his finest season as a pro. In 2016, Golden recorded 12.5 sacks but a torn ACL injury in early October of 2017 ended his season. Bettcher left for the Giants in 2018 and Golden, under a new coaching staff, was moved from weak side linebacker to defensive end where he was less effective.

This year, with Golden healthy and back at the position he is most comfortable in, the Giants are hoping he can rekindle the flame and resurrect his career as a top-flight pass rusher.

Today’s incident drew concern from the reporters in attendance based on Golden’s injury history and the fact the Giants are sustaining an unusual number of injuries here early on at training camp.
