LB Jordan Hicks was ‘a good get’ for Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals upgraded the middle of the defense by signing linebacker Jordan Hicks to a free agent contract. He brings experience, athleticism and performance.

Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is very pleased with him so far.

“He is my voice on the field,” he said on the Arizona Cardinals Coaches Chronicle podcast. “He’s a very, very bright guy, so I’m happy we’ve got him.”

They cut ties with veteran Josh Bynes, who played well for their defense a year ago, but Hick is younger and has been dynamic when he has been on the field. While experienced, he isn’t old.

“He’s a young player also,” Joseph said. “When healthy, he’s a really, really good player.”

In addition to the athleticism, Joseph loves Hicks’ ability to learn the new defense.

“He’s been impressive as far as how much he can retain and process,” he explained. “On every play, he’s getting guys lined up. He’s making every call for us. He’s been a good get for us.”

The Cardinals will need him to be great, as he will play next to Haason Reddick, who still has yet to develop into a great linebacker. Behind both of them, there is not a ton of experience.

Hick was the prize of free agency. While he still has a lot to prove in terms of play on the field, he certainly has done what he has needed to so far to earn the trust of his defensive coordinator.
