Lazio vs Celtic UEFA decision latest as governing body swamped by racism storm

UEFA are expected to decide in the coming hours whether to close Lazio 's Stadio Olimpico for next month’s Europa League tie with Celtic.

The governing body had brought forward the case which saw the Serie A giants charged over their fans' fascist salutes during the win over Rennes from Thursday.

It comes as Celtic fans who have already booked trips wait anxiously to discover if they will be allowed into the match.

But a UEFA source revealed on Tuesday afternoon that the case was still waiting to be heard due to the fallout from the racism storm at Monday evening's Euro 2020 qualifier between Bulgaria and England.

The governing body is hopeful of deciding on the matter before the close of play, he added.

The Italian giants have been threatened with the hardest of measures by UEFA after incidents during the recent group-stage game against Rennes.

Lazio were charged after around 30 of their supporters made fascist salutes in the Curva Nord section of their massive arena and UEFA could hit them with a complete stadium closure. A partial shutdown is also an option.

Celtic were handed 9000 tickets for the Group E clash on November 7 and fans have already begun booking trips.

Lazio have already had part of their stadium closed this season for previous offences.

The Biancocelesti claim they have taken steps to identify the perpetrators and argue the number of Celtic fans already booked up is a reason not to play the game behind closed doors.
