Lazio fans branded 'delinquents' as Serie A chief slams Celtic's Euro rivals

Serie A chief Gaetano Micciche has branded Lazio fans as 'delinquents' for their disgraceful actions in Glasgow last week.

A section of fans from the Italian side marched through the streets of the city making fascist salutes prior to their Europa League defeat to Celtic .

A section of the Hoops' Green Brigade responded with a giant banner showing Italian fascist Benito Mussolini's body being hung from a garage in Milan after he was shot with the message 'Follow your leader.'

Mussolini's Italian politician granddaughter, Alessandra Mussolini, criticised the display and was herself the subject of a banner from the Celtic fans against Aberdeen at Pittodrie at the weekend.

Now the president of Serie A has waded into the row, ahead of the return match next week at the Stadio Olimpico, with Celtic receiving a huge allocation of 9,000 tickets.

Asked about the shameful scenes in Glasgow Micciche said: "I think there has to be more dignity and respect.

"Every form of delinquency which generates negativity and hatred must be fought and punished.

"We must do all we can to get these people away from anything to do with football.

"What is disappointing is that we have always tried to be at the forefront of eliminating episodes of racism and extremism in Italian football.

"It's shameful, just having to talk about incidents like this is annoying.

"We have a series of initiatives, not least to create our own anti-racism team and we have got every player at a Serie A club to fight against racism.

"Something has to happen against those who commit these acts and I hope we do not see this again."

Micciche was asked if lifetime banning orders could be considered as punishment for such acts.

He added: "It's a grave, serious punishment which, when you can identify the people responsible for these acts, has to be adopted."
