Lazio chief opens door for Tottenham to seal Sergej Milinkovic-Savic transfer amid Chelsea links

Tottenham Hotspur have joined Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign Lazio midfield star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, a report by Italian media outlet Calciomercato, via Sports Mole, claims.

The Serbian international, who has been on Lazio's books since 2015, had enjoyed another successful season in Serie A until it was suspended because of the coronavirus, scoring four goals and registering five assists in 25 apperances.

The 25-year-old, who is regarded as a box-to-box midfield player, who is capable of breaking up play and instigating attacks, is highly-regarded right across Europe and is never too far away from being the centre of attention as far as transfer speculation is concerned.

But whilst Chelsea and Manchester United are claimed to have been long-term admirers of the Serbian, it is reported that Spurs have now entered the race to sign the midfielder.

Though Jose Mourinho may be keen on the idea of adding Milinkovic-Savic to his midfield, the chances of Spurs being able to pull this deal off on the cheap are slim. The former Genk man, who has racked up almost 200 appearances for Lazio, is under contract at the Stadio Olimpico until the summer of 2024, meaning Lazio would be in no mood to sell him without receiving a substantial transfer fee.

Despite the fact that Lazio would demand a hefty-sized transfer fee to let the Serbian leave, only recently, Igle Tari, Lazio's Sporting Director, revealed that the club would be open to letting the midfielder leave this summer if the price was right.

Tari told Sky Italia: "The player's desire is crucial. Generally speaking, if a player thinks that their time is up and wants to go somewhere else, it shouldn't be a problem.

"Eras come to an end. The fact he stayed in Rome for five years is because he has strong links with the city and club. When there was some temptation, a bit on our part, a bit on his, we never went all the way. However, things must be assessed at the end of the season."

It is claimed that Lazio would demand a transfer fee of around £80million to contemplate the idea of selling the midfielder.
