Lazio chief offers Celtic excuses as he makes fanciful Europa League claim

Though it ended with defeat to FC Copenhagen, Celtic 's European run this season certainly brought some great memories.

Chief among those would be two wins over Serie A giants Lazio, including a first-ever win on Italian soil.

Those results looked all the more impressive given the run Simone Inzaghi's side had been on in the league before the coronavirus shutdown.

Since the first defeat at Celtic Park they've dropped just four Serie A points and are a point behind Juventus at the top of the table.

And now president Claudio Lotito has claimed that crashing out of the Europa League was all part of the plan.

He told La Repubblica: "Starting (Serie A) again would partially penalise us.

"We had made a choice, believing that we couldn't play on three fronts we had sacrificed the Europa League.

"It's the most awkward competition for scheduling and travel.

"That meant we'd have played once a week while others played twice. If we start again we'll be playing twice a week, so we'd be losing an advantage.

"But I think that's in the interest of all 20 clubs."

Lotito's claim that his club sacrificed the Europa League doesn't stand up to much scrutiny.

While Inzaghi did rotate for the game at Celtic Park, it was a strong team that took to the field in Rome.

Top-scorer Ciro Immobile started, as did star midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and former Liverpool man Lucas Leiva.

Luis Alberto and captain Senad Lulic came off the bench, while Joaquin Correa and Stefan Radu's absences was enforced by injury.

Aside from those two switches there were only three changes from the Serie A win over Milan, with Jony in for Lulic, Marco Parolo in for Luis Alberto and Luiz Felipe replacing Bastos.

Bastos has made just eight appearances this season while Luiz Felipe is more of a first team regular with 19.
