Lay your art on the table

Believing that food can create happiness and that serving delicacies on attractive tableware can build inspiration, Thai artist Suwannee "Nino" Sarabutra has released her latest porcelain collection, titled "The Ripple", now on display exclusively at Iconcraft on the 4th and 5th floors of Iconsiam.

Suwannee is known for the unique designs of her ceramic and porcelain pieces, which have been exhibited here in Thailand as well as in Italy, the US, Singapore and the Philippines.

"The Ripple" features plates and bowls in various forms and sizes. They come in three colours: blue, white and black. The collection is inspired by Suwannee's favourite sport -- kitesurfing. She is captivated by the movement of surfers on the blue sea, and the beauty of the white bubbles generated by surfboards hitting the waves.

Suwannee used pebbles collected as souvenirs from Cinque Terre, a small town in Italy on the Mediterranean Sea, to create the distinctive textures of her new collection. Her focus was on maximising beauty while maintaining optimum function. The porcelain pieces are light in weight, but have body.

Suwannee studied Ceramic Arts at Silpakorn University at a time when it was quite new. She later went to England to teach Ceramic Culture at the Art Academy, London. During this time, her artworks attracted enough attention that she was inspired to return to Thailand in 2008 and build her own studio in Bangkok.

The collection that made her famous was "Exploring Love", comprising over 60 heart-shaped porcelain pieces in various styles and colours that can be wall-mounted.

Suwannee has since produced a further nine collections, including her famous display "What Will You Leave Behind?", with over 125,000 small porcelain skulls arranged for people to step over. The idea was to inspire reflection on life.
