GREATER NOIDA: Lawyers of 24 districts of western UP will go on a strike on Monday to agitate against an alleged incident of assault against a lawyer from GB Nagar.
The incident took place two days back when the victim, Mahesh Nagar (38), was returning home from Noida and was stopped by Phase II police officers.
While the police said that Nagar was heavily drunk and driving his car in a drunken state, lawyers said that a sub-inspector allegedly slapped Nagar repeatedly.
After the incident, the lawyers declared a two-day strike to demand suspension of the sub inspector Arvind Singh.
Manoj Bhati, president of the Gautam Budh Nagar bar association told TOI that Nagar was slapped repeatedly and confined in the lock-up.
“The lawyer was slapped by the SI and put in lock-up. If he was drunk, there should have been action against him under relevant sections. How can they beat up someone like this and confine him in the lock-up,” he asked.
Nagar was subsequently released from the lock-up after the intervention of the bar association.
Central Noida DCP Harish Chander said that the lawyer was drunk and was driving under the influence of the alcohol.
“When he was stopped, he started misbehaving with the sub-inspector. He was taken to the police station where he started threatening and abusing the police officers,” he said.
Soon after the incident, the GB Nagar bar association announced a strike demanding suspension of the sub-inspector.
A meeting of the bar association members took place to discuss the issue on Friday where the members opposed the commissionerate system in GB Nagar.
They further demanded from the high court Bench Sthapna Kendriya Sangharsh Samiti that they too support their strike.
The Samiti has been fighting for the formation of a separate high court bench for western UP for the past several years.
On Friday, the Samiti too extended its support to the GB Nagar bar association and decided to go for a strike on Monday in all the districts.
The Samiti coordinator Sachin Chaudhary has said that all the bar associations of 24 districts of western UP will strike work on Monday.
