Lawyers face court accused of perverting course of justice

The lawyers have appeared in Broome Magistrates Court.

Two Broome lawyers have faced court over allegedly attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Paul Tobin, 38, is a senior lawyer for the Aboriginal Legal Service in the Kimberley where Mitch Donaldson, 30, also works.

Both men appeared in Broome Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

Detectives from the Major Crime Division charged the men last week following complaints of alleged unlawful conduct by both lawyers.

Police say the charges involve witnesses to criminal investigations and court proceedings between 2017 and 2019.

The court heard one complaint stemmed from February last year relating to a case of unlawful wounding.

An investigation into the matter was completed in the same month and statements were taken from witnesses.

Police said Mr Tobin was interviewed over the February matter recently.

Defence lawyer John Kelly requested a copy of the interview and asked that a brief be served on Mr Tobin as soon as possible so they could review its contents.

Mr Kelly made a similar request for Mr Donaldson and the matter was adjourned until September 7.

Both men had their bail extended and Mr Tobin is still working and practicing for the ALS.
