A lawyer who smashed a chair over a judge’s head after a “minor disagreement” has been jailed for more than 18 years.

Imran Manj attacked senior civil judge Khalid Mehmood during a hearing in the city of Jaranwala in Punjab, Pakistani news channel ARY News reported police as saying.

The lawyer is said to have hit the judge with a chair, splitting his head open on 25 April.

The victim was rushed to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital for medical treatment, ARY reports.

According to the Pakistan Today newspaper, the lawyer managed to escape the scene of the incident.

However he was later arrested after judges went on strike and a case was filed against him in an anti-terrorism court.

He was jailed for 18 years and six months on Thursday and also fined 250,000 Indian Rupees (£2,830).

Another man was handed an 18-year prison sentence by an anti-terrorism court in Mutlan last year for “threatening” and throwing shoe at a civil judge during a hearing.

Police said the man threw the item, which hit the chest of the judge, ARY reports.
