Lawyer's case against Mersey Care chair he accused of false claims about being a solicitor is dropped

A private prosecution against the chair of Mersey Care NHS Trust has today been dropped due to a lack of evidence.

Beatrice Fraenkel, an ex Liberal Democrat and Labour councillor, was due to stand trial over claims she had pretended to be a solicitor.

A private prosecution brought two charges against Ms Fraenkel and accused her of being an unqualified person pretending to be a solicitor.

The charges alleged she "wilfully took or used a name, title, addition or description which implied that you were qualified or recognised by law as being qualified to act as a solicitor" on two occasions in 2019.

The private prosecution against Ms Fraenkel was brought by solicitor Robin Makin, the son of famous Liverpool solicitor to the stars Rex Makin.

Today at Liverpool Magistrates' Court the case was listed for trial, but the court was told the case was in fact being discontinued due to a lack of evidence.

Ms Fraenkel, who became chair of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust in 2008, was not present for today's proceedings.

District Judge Wendy Lloyd was told an application for costs relating to proceedings would subsequently be made by Mr Makin in writing.
