Lawyer Left in Coma After Hitting Speed Bump While Taking Selfie on Bike

A glamorous lawyer has been left in a coma for months after a horrific accident while trying to snap a selfie on her bike. Daiane Vasconcelos, 31, has been hospitalised for four months after she was thrown from her bicycle when she hit a speed bump while trying to take a photo. The accident happened in Campo Grande, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, on 8 December 2024.

The mum-of-one suffered a traumatic brain injury and went into cardiac arrest after falling and hitting her head. Doctors managed to save her life, but Daiane hasn’t woken up since. Witnesses said Daiane had been cycling alone in the late afternoon when she hit the bump, braked sharply, and crashed, reported the Mirror.

Since the accident, Daiane has needed round-the-clock care. She spent two months in the hospital before being moved home, where her mother, Vilma Rocha Abreu, and her friend, Marcela Leal, now look after her in a small studio flat. Her 14-year-old son is currently living with his father while the family focuses on Daiane’s recovery.

Daiane’s injuries were severe. Doctors had to carry out facial reconstruction surgery after the bone around her left eye was badly damaged and her chin was broken. While the surgery was successful, the family is facing a long and uncertain wait to see if she will wake up.

The family shared a heartbreaking update, writing: “Prayers during the day, night, dawn, the agonizing wait to see an improvement, a positive evolution, the hope and faith of awakening.”

Before the accident, Daiane was a familiar face on Instagram, often posting legal tips and updates on her fitness routine. Now, her account has been repurposed by her family to raise funds for her care.

Marcela explained that Daiane’s treatment is costly and that she also needs specialist equipment to help aid her recovery and improve her condition.

A fundraiser on the site Vaqinha has already smashed its target, raising R21,645.14 (£2,848.50) against an initial goal of R20,000 (£2,632). But the family says every bit of help still matters as the costs keep piling up.

In a statement, they said: “Daiane is the breadwinner of her own home. With a 14-year-old son, the foundation of her home, she had at least two jobs to keep up with the expenses. The 8th brought our lives to a standstill, but the bills continued. We need your help! In addition to the monthly expenses, Daiane now needs special items to help with the evolution of her clinical condition.”
