A committee assigned to select the two final members of the Election Commission (EC) will nominate a former senior official and a lawyer. The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will then decide whether to approve or reject their choices.
Two thirds of the committee agreed yesterday to pick Loetwirot Kowatthana, the ex-permanent secretary for agriculture, and legal eagle Thitichet Nutchanat.
The NLA previously rejected two of the committee’s choices.
It voted only to endorse five of seven members for the election watchdog. Their names have already been submitted for royal endorsement.
Two candidates, Somchai Charnnarongkul and Pirasak Hinmuangkao, failed to win over the NLA due to their questionable records.
Mr Somchai, former chief of the Department of Agricultural Extension, faced accusations of dereliction of duty from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) while he served as the department chief.
This was in connection with large-scale embezzlement from the Klongchan Credit Union Cooperative.
Ex-governor Mr Pirasak was the subject of debate due to his political affiliations.
