Lawson's 'Kara-age Kun' nuggets to rocket into space as Japanese space food

"Kara-age Kun" nuggets, a hot-selling item at Lawson Inc.'s major convenience store chain were officially certified as a space food in June by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and are scheduled for takeoff on their first trip into space as "Space Kara-age Kun," the company said Monday.

Astronaut Soichi Noguchi, who is heading into space on a private U.S. spacecraft for a mission in late October, will be the first to taste them at the International Space Station (ISS).

According to Lawson, the nuggets are freeze-dried so that they can be stored for a long time, and made into bite-size pieces to avoid the dispersion of crumbs in a weightless environment.
