Lawrence Shankland a Queens Park Rangers transfer target as high profile scout sent to watch striker

Queens Park Rangers are considering a January bid for Scotland star Lawrence Shankland.

R’s director of football Les Ferdinand was at the Dundee derby on Friday to watch the free-scoring Dundee United striker.

Shankland drew a blank but already has an impressive 19 league goals for the Championship leaders before the turn of the year.

QPR boss Mark Warburton is keen to bring in a central defender, with Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna amongst his options, and a centre forward in next month’s window.

Shankland, 24, has been highly recommended to the Loftus Road outfit by a former senior English Championship figure.

Warburton has also had a series of positive reports and dispatched former England and Newcastle United striker Ferdinand to look more closely at the United frontman.

QPR currently have Jordan Hugill on loan from West Ham, while Nakhi Wells is also there on a similar deal from Burnley and Jan Mklakar will also go back to Brighton in the summer.

The English Championship outfit have not spent a lot of money recently, as they have had to comply with the Financial Fair Play regulations, but they could be set for a major windfall with several top Premiership clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, looking to land their England under-21 star Eberechi Eze.

Warburton turned to Scotland in the summer to sign Liam Kelly from Livingston, freed Rangers captain Lee Wallace and Dominic Ball after his loan spell at Aberdeen.

Ferdinand wasn’t alone in scouting the talented frontman.

Norwich City’s Grant Holt was also at the game while Brentford and Everton were also represented at Tannadice for the derby draw.

Rangers and Celtic have also scouted Shankland regularly and the Light Blues were also there on Friday.

United have made it clear that they don’t want to sell in January and would rather wait until they have sealed their return to the Premiership.
