A UNIVERSITY of Newcastle law student who took roughly six times the "prescribed dosage" of LSD and went on a rampage through Hillsborough on Monday night, assaulting a man in front of his son and punching a female police officer to the ground has been granted conditional bail.
Jacob Gribble, a student and rugby player, had to be capsicum sprayed by police before multiple officers wrestled with him for eight minutes until paramedics arrived and sedated him.
Mr Gribble hobbled into Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday on crutches with a broken leg charged with nine offences, including assaulting a police officer and occasioning actual bodily harm.
Mr Gribble, who was represented by criminal defence lawyer James Janke, did not enter any pleas but was granted bail on a number of conditions, including abiding by a curfew, not entering Hillsborough and abstaining from drugs and alcohol. Mr Gribble, 20, told police he consumed 600 micrograms of LSD on Monday evening before he wandered through Hillsborough shirtless and began behaving bizarrely, damaging property and intimidating people.
He went into the backyard of a home and began smashing windows before he charged at a man and tackled him to the ground, repeatedly punching him in the head in front of his teenage son.
Mr Gribble then ran through the house, barging his way out through the front door where he was confronted by police. He punched a female officer in the face, knocking her to the ground and kept throwing punches and pulling her hair.
Other police tried to arrest Mr Gribble and assist the injured female officer and police say they had to wrestle with him for eight minutes, repeatedly striking him in the legs and ribs before he was sedated.
