Dick Wolf is getting the gang back together again.
Eleven years after NBC closed the file on “Law & Order,” our favorite gumshoes are making a comeback with the return of the long-running procedural for a 21st season, the network announced Tuesday.
The revival will once again examine “the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders,” according to NBC.
“There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” Wolf said in a statement. “This is mine.”
Before its abrupt 2010 cancellation, which left fans without a proper farewell, “Law & Order” was closing in on Gunsmoke’s record as the longest running prime-time drama ever. Its spinoff, “SVU,” has since broken that record and is in its own 23rd season.
A cast has yet be announced, but the original run included stars Sam Waterston, S. Epatha Merkerson, Chris Noth, Steven Hill, Jesse L. Martin and the late Jerry Orbach. Several stayed in the Wolf universe, including Merkerson, who stars on “Chicago Med,” and Alana De La Garza on “FBI.”
“‘Law & Order’ is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating,” Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said in a statement. “This is great news for NBC as well as TV fans everywhere.”
Over its 20-season run, “Law & Order” was nominated for 50 Emmys and won six, including outstanding drama series in 1997.
