Law firm posts sixth consecutive year of revenue growth

Edinburgh-headquartered law firm Morton Fraser has reported like-for-like revenue growth for the sixth consecutive year to almost £22 million

The firm said it had used the last 12 months to refine its offering by divesting its residential property operation while investing in specialisms in areas including banking and finance, corporate, commercial property, employment, market negligence, private client and rural property.

Morton Fraser also created two legal technologists roles with the aim of optimising its use of technology to deliver benefits for clients.

Chief executive Chris Harte said: “Investing in people has allowed us to build some of the strongest specialist legal teams in the country.

“The divestment of our residential property department and the creation of legal technologist roles has focused our offering on core legal services at a time when clients are seeking embedded, independent advice about the Scottish landscape.”

Total like-for-like headcount has increased at Morton Fraser by 6% with like-for-like revenues up by 5% to nearly £22 million, the firm said.

Morton Fraser said it continues to recognise the contribution of all staff via its company-wide bonus scheme, with employees earning up to 10% of their salary this year.

Its work on major projects in Scotland over the last 12 months includes advising drinks giant Diageo on the development of its new Johnnie Walker visitor experience.

It also acted for the investment arm of Singapore Press Holdings on the acquisition of purpose-built student accommodation properties in Scotland.

Its Property in Pensions team was appointed to provide legal services on a new panel administered by Curtis Banks, on of the UK's leading providers of Self-Invested Pensions Plans (SIPPS).

The firm was also appointed to provide legal advice to VisitScotland on its property portfolio.

Morton Fraser was the only Scottish law firm to appear in the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For 2019 list, following the introduction of its 'agile working' policy, as part of a wider focus on organisational flexibility and employee wellbeing.
