Lavery brothers are toast of Derryhirk United as club lifts Foster Cup

The Lavery brothers were the toast of Derryhirk United as they helped bring home the Foster Cup last Friday night.

Dwyer’s double was added to by Jamie’s winner to settle a tight affair against Hills- borough Boys which was locked at 2-2.

And just like the semi-final, a 3-2 win for Mickey Smith’s Derryhirk etched their name on the trophy for the first time.

It capped a remarkable second half of the season for Dwyer, having joined the club in November.

His cup final double took him to 15 for the campaign, including the winner in the semi as well.

Not bad for a man who had retired from the game.

He revealed: “I had been with Silverwood but fell out of love with the game with the way things went there.

“I’m nearly 40 now and had just had enough. But I’m friends with Mickey’s dad and he asked me if I would come to Derryhirk and I went for it.

Dromara relishing the challenge as they book place in Division 1A of Amateur League

“It’s a brilliant club with a great history, including winning the Junior Cup.

“And I’ve really enjoyed it here. I’ve 15 goals and should have had a few more but there’s still plenty more games to play so hopefully I’ll be able to add to what I have.”

He added: “The final on Friday night was tight enough but that was the same in the semi-final.

“In many ways that makes it a better feel- ing when you have to really dig deep for your win.

“It was a great feeling at the end and we’ve had a couple of days of celebrating.”

Derryhirk’s focus can now return to climbing the Division Two table.

They visit table-toppers West End Hibs at the weekend.

United are among a clutch of sides who can still gain promotion out of Division Two before the season is out.

They sit sixth but just six points behind current leaders Hibs and with five games in hand on them.

With a place in Division One almost within reach now, the Derryhirk players are refocusing their efforts on their bread and butter in order to dine at that elevated table.

Paul Harbinson ready to step up after serving apprenticeship at Ballymena United

Lavery said: “We’re playing Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday now for a few weeks so it gives us a chance to get right up the table.

“There are a few tough ones to play but most games are difficult in this league because the standard is really high.

“Everyone is beating each other so you can’t take anything for granted.

“We’ve won a cup and we’re in contention for the league so it will go down as a great season whatever happens.

“Promotion has to be our goal at this point and I think this team is good enough to go up and compete in Division One.”
