Because we hadn’t heard his name mentioned in more than a week, LaVar Ball appeared on [TV show/website/radio] TMZ [day of week] Monday [time of day] morning to talk about [name of one of his son’s] LiAngelo Ball. This time, LaVar talked about LiAngelo being better than Zion Williamson, because of course.
LaVar: Man, if Gelo was coming out doing this thing, he’d be the first pick.
TMZ: This year?
LaVar: This year. He’d be the first pick. Can’t nobody hold a candle to that boy.
TMZ: Over Zion Williamson?
LaVar: He can’t hold a candle to that boy. Why? Cause he would shoot his lights out. And he stronger than Zion.
TMZ: Stronger than Zion? Zion’s a big boy.
LaVar: He can be big. But he ain’t no Big Baller. He’s a Williamson. Williamsons ain’t stronger than Ballers.
Impressively, not one sentence of what LaVar said is remotely true. Since not being drafted or not being signed to a Summer League team, Ball has taken part in the inaugural JBA league, traveled overseas with the JBA Select Team and entered the G League player pool without ever signing for a team.
In that same time, Williamson has committed to Duke, taken the college basketball world by storm, established himself as the No. 1 pick and been everything that LiAngelo isn’t — by being productive.
It’s not shocking that LaVar keeps opening his mouth. It’s not shocking that he keeps propping LiAngelo up in hopes of getting him another tryout. That doesn’t make it any less nonsense. But it also doesn’t mean it’s going to stop anytime soon. For everyone’s sake, let’s hope LiAngelo opts to sign with a team like the London Lions soon.
