There was no warning for the Ball family. LaVar Ball seems to have found out his son Lonzo was being traded from the Lakers to the Pelicans over a PA announcement made of the trade during a Drew League game.
LaVar was at the game watching his son LaMelo play when the announcement was made. At least based on videos shared on Instagram's Drew League location stories, the Ball patriarch was incredibly animated, probably defending his eldest son's good name as a player. After, he stood by the wall of the gymnasium, his grin quickly turning into a frown.
The former No. 2 overall pick was traded to the Pelicans alongside Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and three first-round draft picks in a deal for star Anthony Davis.
Coincidentally, Lonzo was also in attendance at the Drew League game, hiding under a black baseball cap, as spotted by Overtime. He wandered in after the announcement was made.
Despite being the biggest advocate for Lonzo to play in Los Angeles, the Ball family's hometown, LaVar later told Sleepers All Day, "All my boys will be in the NBA. When they're all lined up, I'm good. ... Like I said, Lonzo works good with anybody.
That cool response of course was followed by a much more characteristically LaVar response in an interview outside the building with ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk, "Like I said. Guarantee it. It'll be the worst move the Lakers ever did in their life and they'll never win another championship, guarantee it. They're going to regret. I'm going to have fun with it."
