LaVar Ball explains why LiAngelo Ball would beat Zion Williamson

Two months ago, LaVar Ball made one of his more outlandish claims in declaring that his middle son, LiAngelo, was better than unanimous No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson. Then, he didn’t offer much in the way of reasoning, regardless of the fact that it wouldn’t make it any less asinine.

This week on an appearance on the podcast Maybe I’m Crazy, though, LaVar was asked again about the matter and offered something in the way of logic. Or at least LaVar logic.

“First of all, Zion 18. He got 18-year old strength. Gelo’s 20. He got 20-year old strength, especially that Ball strength. If your game is strength and I take that away from you and you can’t shoot…Zion’s not shooting like Gelo and he don’t have no post moves. He’s just running over people. When you get to the NBA, he going to get ready to go through that lane and those guys like to jump in the way and take them charges. Then when you have three or four fouls, you can’t even play your game no more.”

On one hand, it’s impressive LaVar actually gave some form of reasoning. On the other hand, the reasoning is, unsurprisingly, awful. It’s hardly even worth dignifying his explanation with a response. Simplifying Williamson’s game to “He can jump and run,” which Ball did later in the show, is insane.

Comparing him to LiAngelo, who went undrafted and unsigned last season, is mainly just a ploy to keep LiAngelo’s name in the media and minds of casual fans. In no way is LiAngelo better than Williamson. But we’ll never know how the two match up because LiAngelo will almost certainly never find himself in the league.
