Lautaro Martinez warned against Barcelona transfer: 'He'd be a substitute'

Fabio Capello has warned Lautaro Martinez against a move to Barcelona, claiming he is not guaranteed starts at the Camp Nou.

Barca completed the emergency signing of Martin Braithwaite in February as a quick fix, but plan to sign a long-term replacement for Luis Suarez at the end of the season.

Quique Setien has made Martinez his top target this summer, though the player's agent has warned there are "many clubs" pursuing a deal.

Capello told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "If it were me I'd stay at Inter.

"At Barcelona he'd be a substitute."

The former Real Madrid manager also sounded a warning about the financial impact of coronavirus on Spanish football, claiming Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are set to "suffer a lot" as a result.

Martinez, 22, has a €111 million release clause, but it remains to be seen if Barca will be able to stump up that fee once the true economic cost of the pandemic emerges.

"The market will be revolutionised," Capello added.

"Absurd numbers had been seen, but now we'll return to a more reasonable level.

"It seems to me that the only team in Spain who won't be destroyed by the pandemic are Real Madrid."Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are going to suffer a lot."
