Lautaro Martinez could be the transfer Liverpool have been waiting for

The situation surrounding Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez should be one that Liverpool are monitoring if they are looking to make a forward signing this summer.

Arsenal and Tottenham have been names touted with his services but both speculated deals depend on the sales of Alexandre Lacazette and Harry Kane.

And the Argentine's contract saga appears to be the topic of conversation after initial murmurs seemed to simmer down after it initially rising to the surface in May.

In May, 90min reported that the Reds were keeping tabs on the 23-year-old in terms of any developments in the situation in Milan.

Then yesterday, Italian outlet Di Marzio reported that his future has yet to be resolved and a move away shouldn't be ruled out.

The forward option is one that has been fiercely speculated and a position that has been called to improve following the disappointing showing from Roberto Firmino last season.

In terms of competition, the Brazilian competed with Divock Origi for a starting place in Jurgen Klopp's side with the former often being selected ahead of the 26-year-old.

L iverpool's misfiring spells in front of goals suggested last season was that the Reds needed to strengthen their options in front of goal, who better than the Copa America and Serie A-winning forward who netted 17 times, last term.

Despite securing an investment from Oaktree Capital and ensuring the departure of Achraf Hakimi to PSG, Inter still plan to cut costs by 15 to 20 per cent, according to The Athletic.

The 23-year-old built a formidable partnership with former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku last season.

After replacing the out-of-favour striker Mauro Icardi, he has scored 49 goals in 132 appearances for Nerazzuri, as well as chipping in with three goals in the Copa America on course to their first triumph in the South American tournament for 28 years after beating Liverpool's Firmino, Fabinho and Alisson Becker in the final.

Not unlike former Liverpool hero Fernando Torres, Martinez has an eye for goal and is nimble in the pockets of space between the lines or in behind.

In contrast to Firmino who often drops short in a shadow striker/false nine role, the Argentine is a forward who can put the opposition defences on the back foot and is equally clinical with his right or left foot.

There has been no interest from the Reds other than the speculation plus the need to sell some of the fringe players to free up a transfer budget is also imperative.

However, Martinez would be the ideal striking option to Firmino, one who could easily be the 'next Sergio Aguero'.
