From PSG to Greenock - All you need to know about new Nottingham Forest signing Fouad Bachirou

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of midfielder Fouad Bachirou from Malmo.

The 30-year-old is understood to have been tracked by the Reds for some time and favoured by Sabri Lamouchi in particular.

He becomes the club's fourth summer signing, having put pen to paper on a two-year deal.

So here’s the lowdown on the latest recruit at the City Ground.

What’s his career been like so far?

Bachirou - who is known as Freddie or Bash - joined the academy of French giants PSG as a teenager, where he had the chance to learn from some top first-team players.

Although he didn’t make the breakthrough into the senior side himself, France great Claude Makelele, who he trained with at the club, had a particular influence on him.

“Makelele was the best in the world in his position for many years so to learn from him was a real honour," Bachirou told the BBC in an interview earlier this year.

“Like him, I was a small central midfielder and I had actually been rejected by Auxerre and Nice when I was younger because they didn't think I was big enough.

“It used to be that everyone wanted tall, powerful midfielders like Patrick Vieira but Makelele changed that - he was the exception, the small guy in midfield who could still win a lot of balls, and influence the game.

“He made me believe I could make it."

Where did he go after PSG?

To Scotland, and second tier side Greenock Morton.

Bachirou made the move in 2010 and spent four years at the club, having to adapt to what he describes as a “much more direct” style than he had previously been used to.

However, he has said he came close to quitting football before his switch to Morton - only being talked out of it by another France star, Laurent Robert.

He told the Daily Record in 2013: “I was really low in confidence at the end of my time at PSG because I was injured and told I was being released. I wasn’t sure what the future held but Laurent was always there to talk to me.

“His career was over at that time but he came to PSG and was training with the reserves to keep fit just before he retired.

“Laurent was a huge influence on me and would always talk to me about things. Not just football but life in general. He is a big name so it meant a lot.

“I was low in confidence because I’d had so many injuries and PSG were releasing me.

“I doubted myself. I considered quitting football a few times but Laurent helped talk me out of it.

“He told me to keep going and stop putting so much pressure on myself. I stuck at it, tried to enjoy myself and now have a chance of making it to the SPL.”

He made more than 130 appearances for the Scottish side, netting two goals, and is said to have become something of a fans’ favourite.

Forest are understood to have enquired with Greenock about what to expect from the France-born player, and received positive reports about his character.

After leaving Morton, Bachirou headed for Sweden and an Ostersunds team then managed by Graham Potter, staying for three years and helping them secure promotion before joining Malmo in 2018.

How has he got on at Malmo?

He’s been pretty much a regular, featuring close to 100 times across the two-and-a-bit seasons - including playing 12 games so far in the 2020/21 campaign.

He also has plenty of Europa League experience from his time at the club, as well as with Ostersunds.

What’s his playing style?

Bachirou is described as a high-energy, box-to-box, all-action midfielder who is a hard worker.

It is a style which has won him favour with supporters, particularly during his time at Greenock.

He doesn’t score too many goals, with Swedish media outlet Expressen reporting he has bagged two for Malmo - but he has weighed in with 14 assists.

Anything else?

Although born in France, Bachirou is a Comoros international, with 19 caps for his country after making his debut in 2014.

He has been linked with a move to the MLS and Minnesota United in the past, but last year extended his contract with Malmo.

The Reds and Lamouchi, though, have had an eye on him for some time, with the deal agreed said to be for around £600,000.
