Laurent Robert hoping Newcastle United takeover can return the club to the Champions League

Laurent Robert is hoping that a Newcastle United takeover can see the club return to the Champions League.

The Frenchman played 11 times for United during the Champions League campaign of 2002-03, and would love to see the Magpies back in the competition.

A consortium made up of Amanda Staveley, the Public Investment Fund and the Reuben Brothers are waiting for approval from the Premier League to complete the buy-out of the club from Mike Ashley.

Robert, like the majority of United fans, is excited for what the future could hold under new owners.

"I'm very happy about the takeover because I think Newcastle can go back to a very high level. I think the club is big enough for that.

"When I arrived at Newcastle, their position in the table was not very good. Then in the first season, we finished fourth, and the season after that we were third.

"We played in the Champions League and that's why you want to play football.

"I wanted to play in the competition every year when I was at Paris Saint-Germain."

Robert instantly became a fans' favourite after his £10 million move from PSG in 2001, and became a key member of United's attack as the club set about crashing the top four party.

The winger holds fond memories of his time on Tyneside - and is hoping that his son, Thomas, can follow in his foot steps.

The 19-year-old will reportedly leave Montpellier, where Robert senior is a coach, this summer.

" Sir Bobby Robson was our manager and I played with great guys like Alan Shearer and Gary Speed.," he told Sky Sports.

"They were great players and great friends. My wife and I cried when we left.

"I still speak with fans on Instagram and I want to see Newcastle back at the top and to even win the Champions League - why not? I want to come back to see one game there - maybe when Thomas is playing there."
