Laurence Fox branded a 'complete muppet' as he joins anti-lockdown protest in London

Laurence Fox has been branded a "complete muppet" after he joined an anti-lockdown protest in London today.

The actor, 42, has turned his hand to politics in recent weeks and has declared he's going to be running for London mayor in the upcoming election after founding the new Reclaim Party.

He's vehemently against government restrictions to protect against the coronavirus outbreak, and has vowed to lift lockdown "straight away" if he's elected.

Today he made his feelings clear as he joined an anti-lockdown march in London, tweeting videos from the rally and telling the protesters to "take your freedom back".

However, Laurence's tweets from the march didn't sit well with many followers, who called him out online.

One wrote to the telly star: "You still making yourself look a complete muppet...You should seek help."

Another wrote: "As Europe is facing a third wave of covid infections... This seems really counter productive and stupid tbh."

One more added: "They of course have the right to protest, but I love the irony of a bunch of morons chanting 'take back our freedom' while they are all, freely chanting and walking around (mostly without masks as well). Maybe think of a better chant."

In another tweet, a follower wrote: "Doctors and nurses are heroes These people are not, they are achieving nothing."

Another also cast doubt on his goal of becoming London mayor, writing: "You seriously think you can be elected London Mayor!

"Your tweets will come back to haunt you. Under your anti mask anti lockdown guidance Covid infections would be out of control

"Instead we look forward to getting some semblance of normality very soon across the UK."

Laurence previously told The Daily Telegraph : "I am standing for London mayor. With almost all older and vulnerable people having got their jab, I want the lockdown lifted straight away.

"The Government has said vaccines are working, hospitalisations and deaths are tumbling, but we are still being told we won't be able to resume normal life until mid-summer at the earliest.

"Both the main parties are competing in this dreary race to be the last to set the country free. Both Tory and Labour have got this badly wrong.

"I want London – and indeed the rest of the country – to be allowed to get back to work and play immediately – not by late June."

The Reclaim Party's other aims include BBC reform and a celebration of Britain's cultural contributions.
