Laura Whitmore says she believes Love Island will return “bigger and better” after a record number of applicants.

Unlike Love Island US, which aired a socially-distanced series shot in a Las Vegas hotel this summer, the UK 2020 series was postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Whitmore has said anticipation for the next series is already “on another level” after the delayed series of the hit ITV2 programme, which has faced criticism over its support systems for participants.

The 35-year-old presenter, who took over as show host in January following the death of its former presenter and her friend, Caroline Flack, told the Standard: “It’s such a hugely loved show, and I get messages every day asking me when it’s back.

“I know the anticipation has been on another level, with the number of people applying to go on the show.

“It will definitely be back bigger and better, and it just has to be done the right way. You can’t do that show any other way than how we know it.”

Whitmore, who is fronting the latest drive for “incredible” TK Maxx Give Up Clothes for Good, plans to wear borrowed or second hand clothes for Love Island and other big presenting jobs in future, in order to help promote the idea of sustainable fashion.

The presenter, who revealed she has donated 10 bin bags full of clothes to charity in the past six months after several clear-outs of her London home during lockdown, said: “When I did Love Island, the first outfit I wore I borrowed from my friend, a designer Hasan Hejazi, and then the final outfit was made for me but I gave it back for him to then sell on to someone else, because I thought realistically I wasn’t going to wear it again.

“I think sustainable fashion shouldn’t be expensive... You don’t have to buy a really expensive item of clothing for it to be sustainable, you can make it sustainable. You can look through your wardrobe at all the high street brands and think ‘if I can’t wear this, I can give it to someone else’.

“We can all do that more.”
