Laura Whitmore on what Caroline Flack said to her as she replaces Love Island host

ITV bosses have confirmed Laura Whitmore is to step in as the new host of Love Island - replacing Caroline Flack.

The long-standing presenter stepped down from the first ever winter series after being charged with assault.

On Friday's announcement, BBC radio presenter, Laura, said it's an "understatement" to say she's "excited to host the biggest show on TV".

She said her "friend" Caroline had been supportive of her and told her to go for the role.

The Irish broadcaster, 34, will front the ITV dating programme at the start of next year - which sees Islanders head to a brand new location and villa in Cape Town.

Laura said: "To say I’m excited to be heading to Cape Town to host Love Island, the biggest show on television, is an understatement.

"I want to thank ITV for trusting me at the helm of this huge show. I wish it was in better circumstances; Caroline is a brilliant host and also a friend.

Caroline Flack began presenting Love Island in June 2015 (ITV)

"We’ve spoken a lot in the last few days since she stepped down. She has been very kind to me and strongly pushed me for this role. I’ve watched her host every series and know I have big boots to fill. I will try and do it justice."

Flack was charged after police were called to an incident at her home in London, which she shares with her partner Lewis Burton, on December 12.

Officers attended the scene following reports of a man being assaulted.

The 40-year-old will appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on Monday, December 23.

In a statement, Flack said: "Love Island has been my world for the last five years, it’s the best show on telly.

"In order to not detract attention from the upcoming series I feel the best thing I can do is to stand down for series six."

Alongside Laura Whitmore, Maya Jama was also a favourite in the running to replace Flack.

Laura's boyfriend, Ian Stirling, is the voice-over for the show, which will air nightly at 9pm from January 12.

She added: "Above all, I am a massive fan of this show.

"I’ve never been to a Love Island villa, and I can’t wait to get in there to meet all the new Islanders looking for love. The Love Island team are the best in the business… including the voice and heart of the show, Iain. He thought he was getting a holiday away from me… not a chance!"

ITV announced the winter spin-off following the programme's huge success over the past five summers.

The 2019 series reached more than six million viewers, and was the most watched programme at the time among adults aged between 16 and 34.
