Laura Whitmore admits she needed her 'Mammy's' approval to host Love Island

Irish tv presenter Laura Whitmore has proved that she's a true homebird by seeking permission from her 'Mammy' before taking the role as Love Island's latest host.

As viewers look forward to seeing a whole new cast splash across their screens this Sunday, they will also be expecting to see a new host in the form of Laura.

The 34-year-old presenter was announced as the new host of the ITV2 dating show - after Caroline Flack stepped down following assault charges against her boyfriend, Lewis Burton.

Opening up about their close bond, Laura explained why she talked things through with her mother before accepting the job.

"It was just before Christmas, and I was flying back to Ireland because it was my mum's birthday."

"I was at the airport and I got a phone call from my agent saying, 'Producers from ITV would like to meet with you in a few hours."

"I thought, 'I'm at the airport for my mum's birthday, I can't make that meeting'.

"Then I thought, 'Hold on a second, I'll ring up mammy' and I said, 'How would you feel if I came tomorrow instead of today?"

Thankfully, her 'mammy' understood, and Laura landed one of the most sought after tv roles in the UK.

"She said that it was ok. So, thankfully, that's why I'm here now."

Laura hasn't been shy about expressing her excitement surrounding bagging her 'dream job', but she's also admitted that the past few weeks have been a little overwhelming for her.

She explained: "I had to get a cab back from the airport, back to my house and then go to the meeting but it was all pretty quick. It's only really been two or three weeks and then it was Christmas."

Meanwhile, Laura praised former host Caroline for her support during the process, and revealed she got a message of support from her predecessor.

Laura has been dating Iain since 2017 (Instagram)

"It was a little bit of a whirlwind. When Caroline stepped down, she actually sent me a text message saying, 'I really hope you get to do this series.".

The 34-year-old tv former model also recently confessed that she probably wouldn't have applied for the Love Island hosting job if her boyfriend wasn't involved.

The stunner has been dating comedian Iain Stirling, who provides the hilarious voiceover for the show, since 2017.

Laura is reportedly getting paid a whopping £500,000 to host the show (Instagram)

When asked if she would have joined the show without him, the star said: "To be honest, I don't think I would have."
