Laura Kenny misses out on medal in final cycling race of Tokyo 2020 Olympics after crash

Laura Kenny missed out on a medal in the final cycling track race at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as a high-speed crash proved costly to her hopes of a third successive omnium title.

Kenny won two of the four events in the omnium, but it wasn't enough as she finished the omnium in sixth place.

Husband Jason became the first Briton to win seven Olympic golds as he defended his title in the keirin, having earlier in the week become the most decorated British Olympian of all time with his silver in the team sprint.

And Laura ended the Tokyo Games as the most successful British female athlete in Olympic history, having won the madison and finished second in the team pursuit to add to her four gold medals from London and Rio.

Following her disappointment in the Omnium, she told the BBC: "The tempo race I just rode off adrenaline and then we only had 20 minutes.

"And when I got into the elimination race I just felt really tired instantly and I just thought ‘this is bad’ and then I always ride on the inside when my legs are hurting even though in my head I’m saying ‘you need to get out because you are in the worse place’ but you can’t do anything because all you’re thinking is ‘make it easy, make it easy’."

"Then in the points race I had nothing to lose."

Kenny tried to make a break with 36 laps to go in the points race, but had too much to do to catch the medal positions.

"I just wish we had got a lap and then obviously I would have jumped up the standings," she said.

"I think to be honest I was done after the Madison. You just hit such a high. That really was the race that we targeted. We put so much work into that and I think because we did win you just go ‘job done’ and then to refocus and come back into an omnium where you are on your own and it’s not like you’ve got your team mates supporting you, it just wasn’t to be."

The 29-year-old was brought down in the final lap of the scratch race, the first event of the women's omnium at the Izu Velodrome, after Italian rider Elisa Balsamo lost control on her bike on the penultimate lap and stumbled, leaving at least eight riders on the deck

Kenny had nowhere to go to avoid the smash and ended up coming off her bike and sliding down the track.

She was almost hit on the back of the head by another bike, and received immediate medical attention, but managed to get back on the saddle to complete the final lap at a slower pace.

Kenny, 29, broke a bone in her shoulder 18 months ago, and then crashed heavily again at the 2020 world championships in Berlin.

But she had looked back to the peak of her powers in the Madison – and the massive setback to her omnium campaign was a cruel twist of fate when she simply had nowhere to go amid the carnage.

Kenny was awarded 16 points from the opening event while Jennifer Valente led the first round with 40 points - and the American would go on to win gold despite suffering a crash herself in the points race.

Japan's world champion Yumi Kajihara also crashed in the final few laps but hung on for silver.

And Dutch veteran Kirsten Wild, 38, ended with a bronze medal, her first ever Olympic podium despite being an eight-time track world champion.

Kenny said she couldn't get wait to get home to son Albie - as she targets glory in the world championships next.

And she revealed that husband Jason had said he "just wanted to go home" the night before his history-making kierin triumph.

"I was speaking to him last night and he was ‘I just want to go home’ and then when he went I was like ‘he’s only gone and done it!’ It’s just typical Jason, that," Kenny joked.

Kenny added: "I cannot wait (to go home). I came in earlier and was ‘last day!’ It feels like a really long two weeks and I think it is made worse because Albie is at home."

Asked what was next on her radar, Kenny said: "Worlds isn’t that far away is it? I don’t know. I don’t see myself quitting any time soon."
