Laura Kenny crashes in World Track Championships omnium just weeks after breaking shoulder

British cycling star Laura Kenny suffered another injury scare after a dramatic crash in the opening race of the omnium at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin on Friday.

The 27-year-old broke her shoulder just two weeks ago at a World Cup event in Canada, yet was back in the wars when she was involved in a crash before the 30th and final lap of the scratch race.

The incident also saw four other riders lose control, and according to the judges it was caused by the Dutch reigning champion Kirsten Wild.

Fortunately Kenny did not appear to suffer any lasting damage, and she was able to walk off from the track after being checked over by doctors.

She did not suffer any concussion but had to have stitches in her right eye, which was bleeding heavily for a time.

Kenny was able to see the funny side, and could be seen laughing with doctors as she got to her feet following the incident.

Mexico's Lizbeth Salazar was not so fortunate, however, and she had to be carried off on a stretcher after the crash.

Kenny is able to continue in the event, although her hopes of winning a medal are all but over.

For her part in causing the crash, Wild was relegated from second place, and the scratch race was won by Japan's Yumi Kajihara, with American Jennifer Valente moving above Wild into second.

Kenny is Britain's most successful female Olympian of all time, having won four gold medals in the 2012 and 2016 tournaments, and she is also the most successful female track cyclist in Olympic history.

She opted against surgery on her shoulder because she wanted to continue her preparations for the Olympics in Tokyo later this year, where she hopes to compete in the omnium, team pursuit and the madison.
