Laura Ingraham in Bondi Beach massacre gaffe as she blames British authorities for not stopping shooters

The mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday will go down in history as one of Australia’s worst massacres. A father and son team of gunmen, Sajid Akram (50) and Naveed Akram (24) targeted a Hanukkah gathering, resulting in 15 deaths and multiple injuries.

Sajid Akram was shot dead at the scene by police, and Naveed Akram was arrested but rushed to Sydney hospital with critical injuries. The pair used legally obtained firearms to commit the attack, with the father having a firearms license permitting him to own the weapons.

It’s a grim story that arrived on a particularly miserable weekend. Given that the perpetrators were Muslims, the conservative right in America latched onto the incident like limpets. Unfortunately, it seems that at least one of them didn’t pay much attention in geography class.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham was quick to step in and blame authorities for not responding to the shooting quickly enough. There’s only one problem – her beef was with British cops. Given that they’re based around 10,000 miles away on the other side of the world, it’s perhaps not surprising they weren’t first on the scene:

It’s not beach weather in England right now..

A moment’s thought might have also led Ingraham to the conclusion that it’s rather unlikely that a massacre would take place on a British beach in mid-December. The United Kingdom is currently in the grip of cold, grey, and dark weather, with the sun setting mid-afternoon. There are beaches in England, but at this time of year any would-be mass killer would have to settle for scaring some seagulls.

Then again, I suppose Ingraham is very technically correct that authorities in Britain were indeed unable to stop the shooting. Perhaps if Concorde were still in operation, they might have arrived on the scene by the next morning?

Ingraham belatedly realized she was out geographically by a hemisphere or so and deleted the post, but not before being roundly mocked. If there’s a moral, it’s that if you see a tragedy unfolding on the news, remember you don’t have to stick your oar in and give your opinion on what’s happening. Sometimes it’s fine not to have anything to say about something!
