A Tasmanian man accused of murdering a man and injuring a woman has refused to leave his cell for a court appearance.

Last Thursday, police were called to an alleged stabbing in the Launceston suburb of Ravenswood.

The victim, a man aged in his 30s, died at the scene. The woman, also aged in her 30s, was taken to the Launceston General Hospital in a critical condition but has since stabilised.

Two teenage children of the injured woman were in the house at the time but were not harmed. One of them phoned the police.

Police today charged 44-year-old Kerry Whiting with murder, attempted murder, and aggravated burglary.

Mr Whiting was meant to appear in court today but refused to leave his cell.

Magistrate Sharon Cure told the court "a great deal of force" would be required to get Mr Whiting out of his cell and onto video link.

Therefore she decided to adjourn the matter due to safety considerations.

Mr Whiting will next appear on Monday.
