Luciana Berger faced laughter for a press conference gaffe where she introduced herself as a Labour MP after resigning from the party.

Ms Berger and six other Labour MPs quit the party on Monday in a major blow for Jeremy Corbyn, saying the party leadership’s failures over Brexit and anti-Semitism had left them no choice.

However, as the MPs announced their decisions at a press conference in London, Ms Berger faced laughter as she initially introduced herself as “the Labour Party MP”.

She quickly laughed it off, before clarifying: “I am the Member of Parliament for Liverpool Wavertree.”

Ms Berger was joined by MPs Chris Leslie, Angela Smith, Gavin Shuker, Mike Gapes, Ann Coffey and Chuka Umunna in resigning amid simmering tensions within Labour ranks.

She told the press conference: "This has been a very difficult, painful, but necessary decision.

"From today, we will all sit in Parliament as a new independent group of MPs."
