April 13--A new Latino theater festival is coming to Chicago this summer, it was announced on Monday.
The 2015 Carnaval of New Latina/o Plays is a collaborative effort from the Latina/o Theatre Commons and HowlRound, a theater commentary website, that will showcase 12 new plays by Latino playwrights from all around the U.S. It's set to take place at The Theatre School at DePaul University (2350 N. Racine) in July.
The plays that will be presented in staged readings at the festival include "Parachute Men" by Mando Alvarado, "Sweep" by Georgina Escobar, "Perfectamente Loca/Perfectly Insane" by Magdalena G, "the livin' life of the daughter mira" by Matthew Paul Olmos, "M᳢ by Milta Ortiz, "Swimming While Drowning" by Emilio Rodriguez, "Mother Road" by Octavio Solis and Wolf at the Door" by Marisela Trevino Orta.
The scripts of four more plays will be distributed to attendees: "Satyricono" by Migdalia Cruz, "APPEAL -- The New American Musical of Mexican Descent" by Amparo Garcia-Crow, "Siempre Norteada: Always Late, Always Lost" by Virginia Grise" and The Sweetheart Deal" by Diane Rodriguez.
Carnaval will take place July 23-25. Admission to all events is free, but reservations should be made in advance at LatinaoTheatreCommons.com.
