Latest vaccination figures for Merseyside and Cheshire

Nearly 92 per cent of people in Merseyside and Cheshire aged 80 and over have received a first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, new figures show.

And the statistics also demonstrate how 95 per cent of those aged 75-79, and 81.5 per cent of people aged 70-74 have had the initial jab, in our areas.

The figures are based on provisional data from NHS England for vaccinations up to February 7.

A total of 12,733,865 Covid-19 vaccinations took place in England between December 8 and February 12, including first and second doses, which is a rise of 440,658 on the previous day's figures.

Of this number, 12,246,166 were the first dose of a vaccine, a rise of 436,925 on the previous day, while 487,699 were a second dose, an increase of 3,733.

The Prime Minister has this weekend met workers helping the country to fight back against the pandemic by developing vaccines, coronavirus tests and making PPE.

Boris Johnson toured three plants in the north east of England, and paid tribute to their efforts to help beat the disease.

He was at the Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies plant in Billingham, Teesside, which is scheduled to produce millions of doses of the Novavax vaccine and is still being trialled.

After meeting some of the plant's 850-strong workforce, he said: "If approved, Novavax will further strengthen our already record breaking vaccine rollout.

"The work of the team here to get this vaccine ready showcases some of the very best of British science and manufacturing.

"I'm hugely proud of the efforts here at Fujifilm, as we all come together to beat this pandemic.

"I urge you all to keep up this vital work, helping to get those vaccines into arms and protecting our most vulnerable."

Today, the government said a further 621 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Saturday, bringing the UK total to 116,908.

Separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 135,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.

The government also said that, as of 9am on Saturday, there had been a further 13,308 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 4,027,106.

Mr Johnson has said he is "optimistic" he will be able to set out plans for a "cautious" easing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions in England later this month.

The Prime Minister said that while the overall number of cases remained high, the infection rate was starting to fall while the rollout of the vaccination programme has made "huge progress".

"I'm optimistic, I won't hide if from you. I'm optimistic but we have to be cautious," he told reporters during a visit to a vaccine manufacturing facility in Teesside.

His comments came as scientists continued to urge caution over the easing of the current controls when Mr Johnson sets out his "roadmap" out of lockdown for England on February 22.

One scientist advising the government said ministers risked a third wave of the pandemic as big as the current one if they moved too quickly while senior NHS figures said the health service remained under huge pressure.

Ministers however are confident the vaccination programme is on track to meet the target of getting an offer of a jab to everyone in the top four priority groups - including the over-70s - by the deadline of Monday.
