Latest updates as hairdressers and barbers reopening date is confirmed

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that hairdressers and barbers can reopen from July 4.

Hairdressers, nail salons, barber shops and beauty salons across the country closed their doors in March after the Government enforced lockdown and have been waiting for news ever since.

While possible new rules and reopening dates have been circulating for a while now, Boris Johnson confirmed the news in a press conference today.

Boris Johnson said the Government believes there is no imminent threat of a second wave of coronavirus and since the UK continues to meet the five steps laid out for lockdown restrictions to be lifted, the Government will continue to do so.

From July 4, hairdressers and barbers can reopen providing that staff wear protective wear such as visors.

Boris Johnson added that nail bars cannot yet reopen, though there are plans to review this.

Other venues such as cinemas, theme parks and outdoor gyms, along with bars and restaurants can reopen from July 4 too.

The Prime Minister also noted that from July 4, the two metre social distancing rule will be lowered to one metre.

He also added that each new step taken today is conditional and reversible.
