Latest update on new 'state of the art' Mossley Hill Hospital

The demolition of the former Mossley Hill Hospital is well underway, with hopes of starting work on a brand new facility at the site in 2022.

Plans for the new 106 bed mental health hospital in south Liverpool were submitted for the first time in 2017 and would see the former site make way for a state of the art facility.

The proposals put forward by Mersey Care were resubmitted in February 2021 as the first submission was not taken to completion.

In the summer, once hospital operations had been moved away, some preparatory work took place on the vacant hospital site and a contractor was commissioned to demolish the former buildings.

The demolition works began in the winter and by early December parts of the former site had been cleared by contractors Connell Brothers in the first phase of works.

The demolition experts are aiming to recycle 95% of the salvage in the new build.

Demolition and clearance of the site is set to continue in January with hopes of completing this phase of the project by February 2022.

An amendment to the planning permission was submitted at the tail end of 2021, however a spokesperson for Mersey Care noted that construction work is still aiming to begin at the site in 2022.

They said “We continue to work with the local authority around compliance with planning regulations. It is hoped building work will start early in 2022 and the new hospital will be operational in 2024.”

Speaking in early December, Mersey Care’s Chief Operating Officer Local Services Division Donna Robinson said: “It’s great to see the demolition that has been commenced on site.

“We are really looking forward to when we will see our new hospital with all of its en suite single bedroom accommodation for people within Liverpool. They will have a therapeutic environment to rest and recover from their crisis episode.”

Construction of the new 106 bed mental health facility will be carried out by construction firm GRAHAM.

Commenting on the recent progress of the project in December, Greenbank ward Cllr Laura Robertson-Collins said: “Mossley Hill Hospital is a very important site in our ward. It’s a large site and it’s been a healthcare facility for a long time so we’re extremely pleased that it is remaining a health care facility and the investment is carrying on from Mersey Care.”
